🎄It is finally here—Influenza Season! And How to Stay Healthy This Holiday Season

We all know this time of year is filled with joy, family, and celebration. But it’s also prime time for influenza (better known as the flu). With more gatherings and close contact, flu viruses find the perfect opportunity to spread. Below is some helpful information about the flu—plus simple ways to stay healthy during the holiday season.

What Exactly Is Influenza (Flu)?

Influenza is a highly contagious respiratory illness caused by influenza viruses that primarily infect the upper respiratory system—including the nose, throat, and sometimes the lungs. The two most common types that infect humans are Influenza A and Influenza B, with Influenza A being the most widespread.

While the flu is common, it can still cause serious illness—especially for young children, older adults, pregnant women, and individuals with chronic health conditions.

Common Symptoms of the Flu

Flu symptoms often come suddenly. Some signs to watch for include:

  • Fever or chills (It's important to note that not everyone with the flu will have a fever).

  • Body aches and headaches

  • Sore throat

  • Cough

  • Fatigue (tiredness)

  • Runny or stuffy nose

  • Occasionally vomiting or diarrhea (more common in children)

If you or a loved one feels these symptoms developing—especially rapidly—it’s important to take them seriously.
