Breast Cancer Awareness Month

Oct 9
2 min read

October is Breast Cancer Awareness Month, giving us an opportunity to learn, spread awareness, support one another, and make time for our health.

What Is Breast Cancer?

Breast cancer is a disease where cells in the breast begin to grow in an abnormal way. These cells can form a tumor and, in some cases, spread to other parts of the body. Breast cancer can affect women and men, although it is much more common in women.

Breast Cancer Can Affect Anyone

Knowing about breast cancer and understanding your personal risk can help you make informed choices about your health. Risk can be influenced by things such as age, family history, and certain genetic factors.

Know Your Body

Knowing what is normal for your body can help you recognize changes. Changes in the breast or chest may include:

  • A new lump

  • Changes in size or shape

  • Skin changes

  • Nipple changes

  • Unusual discharge

Many changes are not related to cancer. If you notice something new or unusual, talk with your health care provider. They can help you understand the change and answer your questions.

Stay Up to Date With Screenings

Screenings can help find breast cancer before there are noticeable changes or symptoms. Recommendations can vary based on your age, family history, and personal risk.

Talk with your health care provider about when to begin screening and which options are right for you. Staying up to date with recommended screenings is one way to be proactive about your health.

Small Healthy Habits Matter

Taking care of our overall health can be a great place to start. Simple, healthy choices may help lower the risk of breast cancer and support our well-being. These are known as protective factors.

Find ways to stay active, whether it’s walking, dancing, gardening, exercising, or playing with your kids. Enjoy a variety of foods, including fruits, vegetables, and whole grains. Limiting alcohol and knowing your family health history are also helpful steps.

These healthy habits can help lower your risk, but they cannot guarantee that you will not develop breast cancer. Every small step toward a healthier lifestyle is a positive step for your health.

Community Support

Breast Cancer Awareness Month is about more than wearing pink. It is about learning, supporting, and taking action. Talk about healthy habits with your family. Encourage your friends to take care of their health. If you know someone going through treatment, be there to support them, offer encouragement, and celebrate those who have faced breast cancer.
