Traditional Foods, Healthy Community

Food is more than just something we eat. It connects us to our culture, families, land, and community. Traditional foods carry knowledge and stories from past generations, nourishing both our bodies and our local food systems.

When we share and teach our traditional ways of making and harvesting food, we help the next generation understand the whys and how’s. Young people often ask: How do we harvest? How is a traditional dish made? Where does this food come from? Why is it important to our community? By answering these questions, we keep our traditions alive. Encouraging curiosity and participation helps children develop respect for the land and feel proud of their heritage.

Growing Food, Growing Community

At Public Health, our Food Sovereignty Team grows and harvests food all year for our community. This work strengthens our connection to the land and supports those in need.

The Food Sovereignty group also collaborates with Road Runner Food Bank to provide support and connect individuals to additional resources. Through food drives, educational programs, and outreach events, this partnership helps us improve food access, connect with the community, and bring healthier foods closer to home. These efforts address food insecurity and help community members make informed dietary choices.

These efforts show how our community can come together by sharing resources, growing food, and supporting each other to build a strong, healthy community.

Connect through food this fall.

As fall arrives, take time to celebrate the food that brings us together. Try a traditional recipe, learn the story behind a family dish, find out where your fresh food comes from, and get involved with local food resources.

Strong communities grow when we support each other and share what we have.

With the beginning of the harvest season, here are a few ways you and your family can nurture healthy habits and connect through food:

  • Pick and enjoy the food you have grown.

  • Cook together as a family using fresh ingredients.

  • Support or visit your local food bank.

  • Share your harvest with people in need and give back to the community.

Keeping tradition alive through food

Tradition is essential to building and maintaining a strong, resilient community. Our cultural practices, community gatherings, ceremonies, and the foods passed down through generations all play a vital role in keeping us connected. These traditions remind us of where we come from and inspire us to preserve our heritage for future generations. Sharing meals during holidays and special occasions reinforces family ties and community strength.

When we share food knowledge and recipes with younger generations, we pass on more than just cooking instructions. We teach them where their food comes from, how to prepare it, and why it matters to our families and community. This helps preserve our identity and strengthens the bonds between generations.

By sharing meals, cooking together, and supporting each other, we carry on our traditions, promote health, and strengthen our community. Food is a powerful way to connect and sustain our community.

Growing Stronger Together

From planting and harvesting to sharing family recipes, each interaction with our food deepens our sense of tradition. By supporting local food systems, respecting traditions, and caring for one another, we build lasting bonds, strengthen our traditions, and create a healthier community.

Let’s come together to preserve our traditional foods, support local farmers and food producers, and share healthy meals with our families and neighbors. By taking action today, we can honor where we come from, strengthen our community, and build a healthier future for everyone.
