With the holiday season and New Year’s just around the corner, it can be tricky to stay on top of our health. The busy festivities can get hectic, but with a few mindful strategies, you can enjoy all the fun without feeling overstuffed or stressed.
Here are a few tips to guide your sleigh this season:
Stay Moving and Get Active
With busy schedules and changes in weather, it can be tough to stay active. Try to find small ways to keep moving. Go for a walk after meals, join us at our upcoming fun run/walk event, or do a quick indoor workout. Movement doesn’t need to be intense – just staying active will keep your energy up and help you feel great!
Watch Your Portions
With all the cooking and feasting the holidays bring, it’s easy to overeat. But you don’t have to miss out on your favorite dishes if you eat mindfully. Tip: Try eating smaller portions, eating slowly, and listening to your body’s hunger cues to enjoy food without overdoing it.
Drink Water
Among all the fun festive drinks, don’t forget to hydrate with water. Tip: Drink a glass of water (8 oz) before each meal to help with digestion and control cravings. Holiday drinks can be packed with added sugars, so try to limit sugary beverages and stay hydrated to feel your best.
Get Enough Sleep
Trust me – the Hallmark movie can wait! Don’t fight your sleep – rest is just as important as all your holiday plans. Aim for 7 to 9 hours of sleep each night to keep your body and mind strong, so you’re ready to enjoy the next day’s activities.
Reduce Stress
The holidays can be stressful with so many things to do. Be sure to embrace moments of relaxation or make time to kick your feet up. Staying calm and managing stress will help you enjoy the season more. Tip: Do what makes you happy and don’t forget to breathe!
Enjoy Treats in Moderation
It’s okay to indulge in a holiday treat or two, but moderation is key. Pick your favorite treat, enjoy it slowly and remember – you don’t have to have everything. Savor the moments without overindulging.
Stay Consistent
One of the biggest challenges during the holidays is staying consistent with healthy habits. It’s important to remember that perfection isn’t the goal – balance is. If you overstuff yourself or miss a workout, don’t stress. Just get back on track the next day!
The holiday season doesn’t have to be an obstacle to a healthy lifestyle. As it is the season of giving, don’t forget to give your body and mind the same love and attention they deserve to keep you feeling your best.
