Why Colorectal Cancer Is Often Preventable
Colorectal cancer is considered one of the most preventable cancers because screening can detect and remove precancerous polyps before they turn into cancer.
Key reasons it’s preventable:
1. Slow Development
Most colorectal cancers begin as adenomatous polyps (non-cancerous growths). It typically takes 10–15 years for some of these polyps to develop into cancer.
2. Polyps Can Be Removed
During certain screening tests—especially a Colonoscopy—doctors can remove polyps immediately, stopping them from becoming cancer.
3. Early Detection Improves Survival
If Colorectal Cancer is found early (before spreading), the 5-year survival rate is about 90%. Screening helps detect cancer at these early stages.
Types of Colorectal Screening Tests
1. Colonoscopy
Examines the entire colon with a flexible camera.
Can find and remove polyps in the same procedure.
Usually recommended every 10 years for average-risk adults.
2. Stool-Based Tests
These look for hidden blood or abnormal DNA in stool.
Examples include:
Fecal Immunochemical Test (FIT) – done yearly
Guaiac-based Fecal Occult Blood Test – yearly
Multitarget Stool DNA Test – every 3 years
3. Imaging Test
CT Colonography (virtual colonoscopy)
Recommended about every 5 years
When Screening Should Start
The American Cancer Society recommends:
Start screening at age 45 for people at average risk.
Earlier if someone has:
Family history of colorectal cancer
Inflammatory bowel diseases like Crohn's Disease or Ulcerative Colitis
Genetic syndromes (such as Lynch Syndrome)
As we continue raising awareness around Colorectal Cancer, Jemez Public Health will be hosting a Men's Education night on Thursday, March 19th at the Walatowa Youth Center from 5:30PM to 7:30PM. Come join us and learn more, engage in open discussion, and work towards breaking the stigma around men's health. Dinner will be served to those who attend, drawings will be taking place throughout the event and also enter in to win a brand-new chainsaw!
