To all of the veterans of our military branches, thank you for your service, sacrifice and all that you have done and continue to do to keep us safe. Happy Veterans Day!

Did you know diabetes affects nearly 25% of the VA's patient population, and that diabetes is the leading cause of blindness, end-stage renal disease, and amputation

for veteran patients?

(US Department of Veteran Affairs)

According to the CDC, it is estimated that 78% of veterans are overweight or obese, putting them at high risk for many chronic diseases like diabetes. On this day of tribute, we call to action on the seriousness of this matter and highlight ways to help keep our veterans and our families healthy. For people living with diabetes, physical activity is a foundation for diabetes management! It helps manage blood sugar levels and lowers risk for other complications, including heart disease and nerve damage. For those who are working to reduce their risk, physical activity is a great way to manage blood pressure, lower cholesterol and blood sugar levels and maintain a healthy weight.

Each week, adults should aim for 150 minutes of moderate-intensity physical activity. 150 minutes may sound like a lot, but you do not have to do it all at once. It could be 30 minutes a day, 5 times a week, or you can break it up into smaller chunks of time. Choose activities that you enjoy and start at a comfortable level. Our bodies are made to move, and we feel so much better when we do! Physical activity is anything that gets your body moving. Some great examples are walking, dancing, yard work, hiking, hunting, and biking! Make physical activity a family affair this November and aim to create environments that support healthy choices for everyone!

SAVE THE DATE: This November Jemez Public Health is hosting TWO events for Diabetes Awareness Month. Details are in the flyer below!
