Aging is a natural part of life, but our daily choices can influence how we age. Each September, we recognize Healthy Aging Month, a time dedicated to reminding us that healthy aging isn’t about trying to look younger; it’s about staying active, independent, and engaged so you can enjoy life to the fullest at any stage. The good news is that even small changes can have a significant impact on your long-term health and well-being.
Mindset Matters: A positive attitude and resilience in aging can help you navigate life with less stress.
Move with Purpose: Incorporate enjoyable physical activities, such as walking, dancing, or cooking, instead of following rigid exercise routines.
Eat for Longevity: Focus on nutrient-dense, balanced meals that support bone, Brain, and heart health. Include foods like leafy greens, yogurt, and salmon in your diet.
Stay Socially Connected: Building a community and fostering friendships is essential for avoiding isolation. You could create a walking group with community members or visit the Jemez Senior Center for social activities and events.
Prioritize Sleep: Rest is a powerful tool for enhancing memory, boosting energy, and promoting healing.
Keep the Brain Active: Engage in activities such as reading, completing puzzles, or learning new skills to maintain cognitive sharpness.
Preventive Health Care: Schedule regular check-ups and screenings and indulge in self-care activities like baths or massages. Understanding and managing your health can lead to a healthier life.
How Jemez Public Health Can Support You!
We offer a variety of healthy and exciting ways to support healthy aging. Below are some classes and group outings provided to our community:
Grocery Tours: Join Anita Toya as she guides you through a grocery store tour, introducing healthier food options and encouraging you to try new foods. The tour will conclude with a nutritious lunch, providing an opportunity for community members to engage with one another.
Road Runner Food Bank (RRFB): At Jemez Public Health, in partnership with RRFB, families can visit once a month to collect food items at the Jemez Senior Center, promoting a healthy diet.
Nutrition Clinics with Amaiah: Meet our nutritionist, who will help you achieve your nutritional goals! Whether you want to maintain a healthy diet, add more greens to your meals, or explore spontaneous dinner ideas, she has something for everyone.
FiTT Driven Program: Be Rewarded for Your Healthy Changes! The FiTT-Driven Program incentivizes healthy habits, such as proper hydration, engaging in physical activity, and prioritizing well-being through regular check-ups and screenings.
Healthy aging doesn’t require drastic changes; it’s all about consistency and balance. By staying active, eating well, maintaining connections with others, and caring for your mental health, you can not only add years to your life but also bring more energy and joy to those years.
