October is National Hand Hygiene Month! It is our job to teach our youth how to protect themselves and their health by practicing consistent handwashing. Germs are everywhere. Cold season is quickly approaching, and hand washing can help you and your family stay healthy this cold season. Not washing your hands is one of the quickest ways to spread germs and illnesses.

According to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC), washing hands can keep you healthy and prevent the spread of respiratory and diarrheal infections. Below in bullet points are ways you can transfer germs from person to person by not washing your hands.

  • Blowing your nose, coughing, or sneezing into your hands and then touching the hands of others or common objects.

  • Touching your eyes, nose, and mouth with your unwashed hands. (CDC. 2023)

  • Preparing or eating food and drinks with your unwashed hands.

  • Touching surfaces or objects that have germs on them, then touching the hands of another.

Take a moment to think about what you have come in contact with today, including doorknobs, our faces, cellphones, gas station pumps, fitness equipment etc. They all contain germs. Washing our hands makes hand hygiene a prime factor in our day-to-day lives, so wash your hands and get your flu shot this cold season.
