National Diabetes Awareness Month

ree

November is a time when communities across the country bring attention to diabetes through education, activities, and support. For this year’s awareness campaign, Jemez Public Health is making diabetes a family affair because it impacts community members of all ages. This dangerous, yet often silent disease, is caused by consistently high levels of sugar in the blood, which can damage the eyes, gums, kidneys, and nerves. As a complex health issue, managing this disease requires clear communication between families and multiple healthcare professionals. Hemish Health Together is our motto as we encourage families and healthcare professionals to take cooperative action in diabetes prevention and management.

This month, Jemez Public Health will be offering education, interactive activities, and incentives through our blog. We will also be hosting TWO events. Our first Event will be held on National Diabetes Awareness Day, Monday, November 14, 2022. We will be offering a healthy snack for all community members as we educate and raise awareness about barriers to care. Our second event will be held on Tuesday, November 29, 2022, as we collaborate with various programs to feature a family-friendly Diabetes fair and workshop. Stay tuned for details as both events will include festive activities the whole family can enjoy!

As for our first interactive activity, we challenge families to wear blue throughout the week and take a picture together. You may send one weekly picture every week with you and at least one family member or friend. We encourage group photos to spark conversations around diabetes within the household. You can send the picture via email to fitt@jemezpueblo.us. For every picture you email us wearing blue with a family member or friend you will be entered to win a Thanksgiving Dinner with all the fixings. The contest will close Friday, November 18, 2022, at 9:00AM and the winners will be announced by noon. We look forward to seeing all your pictures as we tackle diabetes together!
