Mental Health Awareness Month with Resources for the Jemez Community

ree

As we conclude our exploration of Mental Health Awareness Month, it’s crucial to understand that mental health should not be limited to just the month of May; it requires an ongoing commitment to address mental health issues, especially within our community. By collaborating, we can continue to confront these challenges. Let’s promote open conversations and implement community-driven initiatives that can genuinely create a positive impact.

The journey toward mental wellness is deeply personal, but we are not alone in this endeavor. Every step count, whether it involves seeking professional help, bonding with loved ones, engaging in self-care practices, or embracing cultural traditions. There are numerous resources available in and around our community that provide guidance and support. Below is a list of some facilities and resources where individuals can seek assistance.

  1. Art Therapy is available at the behavioral health program within the Jemez Health Clinic. It serves as a non-verbal outlet for emotions and experiences that can be difficult to express in words. Through activities like drawing and painting, art therapy encourages self-expression, explores emotions, and promotes healing.

  2. Walatowa Fitness Center offers a variety of group workout classes, including heavy weightlifting, cross-fit training, bodyweight training, and yoga. Exercise can significantly improve mental health by reducing symptoms of anxiety and depression, boosting emotional resilience, and enhancing mood. It also helps individuals cope better with stressful situations. Additionally, the gym provides opportunities for social interaction and helps build support networks, which can be beneficial for mental well-being.

  3. Hemish Path to Wellness: This 1.7-mile pedestrian pathway runs alongside Highway 4 and provides a dedicated and safe route for community members. Walking has significant mental health benefits, including the release of endorphins, a connection to nature, mindfulness, and improved mood. By incorporating regular walks into your routine, you can positively impact your overall well-being.

  4. Connecting with Cultural Roots: A deeper connection to our culture can significantly enhance mental health by fostering a sense of belonging, providing social support, and helping us understand our identity. Engaging in cultural practices, traditions, and beliefs can offer valuable tools for coping with stress. This feeling of connection to one's culture can also boost resilience, enabling individuals to better overcome challenges.

Let’s carry forward the lessons we’ve learned this month by incorporating compassion, understanding, and proactive care into our daily lives. By doing this, we not only support ourselves but also contribute to a society that prioritizes and nurtures mental health. Remember, seeking help is a sign of strength, not weakness. Together, we can create a world that embraces mental health, ensuring that every individual has the opportunity to thrive.
