Healthy and Protected: National Immunization Awareness Month

August is here which means it’s National Immunization Awareness Month! This is the perfect time to learn more about your immune system and why getting the right vaccines throughout your life is so important. Understanding immunizations and vaccines can help you make informed decisions about your health and the health of the community.

What is Immunization?

Immunization is the process of making your body resistant to a certain disease through vaccines. Your body will learn how to fight off specific germs that cause diseases so you don’t get sick if you’re exposed to them in the future. When people in the community are vaccinated it creates “herd immunity.” This means that the spread of diseases is slowed or stopped because there are fewer people who can catch and spread the illness. This helps protect people who cannot be vaccinated due to medical reasons, like young children or those with weakened immune systems.

Why Are Vaccines Important?

  • Building Immunity: Vaccines strengthen your body’s defenses, reducing your chances of contracting and spreading diseases. This means you stay healthier and are less likely to experience severe illnesses.

  • Protecting Others: Vaccines defend your health but also the well-being of those around you. By getting vaccinated, you help shield vulnerable populations from illness.

  • Stopping Disease Outbreaks: Vaccines play a crucial role in controlling and even eliminating diseases. Staying up-to-date with your vaccinations helps prevent these illnesses from making a comeback.

What You Can Do

During National Immunization Awareness Month, take the time to learn more about the vaccines you need. We encourage you to speak to your doctor or healthcare provider to ensure you are protected and caught up on routine vaccinations. Getting vaccinated is a simple and effective way to protect yourself and those around you.

More information on vaccinations for children and adults will be discussed in future blog posts. Contact Jemez Public Health at (575) 834-7207 or the Jemez Health Center at (575) 834-7413 for any questions you may have.
