World Glaucoma Week is a week dedicated to raising awareness about glaucoma. Glaucoma is a disease that damages the optic nerve due to an abnormal buildup of aqueous humor, a natural fluid in the eye essential for nourishment and structure. When increased pressure compresses the optic nerve, vision is affected and blindness begins to occur. Glaucoma is a leading cause of blindness because it often goes unnoticed in its earliest stages. It is most common in adults over the age of 40, however we have seen teenage patients present with early-stage glaucoma at the Jemez Comprehensive Health Center.

Annual eye exams allow your eye doctor to check for common diseases before they become a problem. Early detection of glaucoma can slow, or even prevent vision loss! Prioritize your eyes this year and call (575) 834-7413 to schedule a comprehensive eye exam today!
