Sunburn can hurt you in more ways than one! The danger goes beyond the pain, redness, and discomfort. Even after sunburn fades, lasting damage remains. Sunburn is an inflammatory reaction to ultraviolet (UV) radiation damage to the skin's outermost layers. Although signs of a sunburn may not appear for a few hours, it is typically at its worst 24 to 36 hours after sun exposure and resolves within 3 to 5 days. Below are some tips on how to manage a bad sunburn.

Stay out of the sun. Additional sun exposure will only increase the severity and pain of sunburn.
Take a cool bath or shower. Cool water will decrease inflammation and ease the pain.
Use a cool compress. For smaller areas, a cool compress can relieve inflammation and reduce pain.
Moisturize affected areas. Sunburns dry out your skin, so moisturizing is key. Try using a non-scented hydrating moisturizer.
Drink plenty of water. Rehydrate your skin and body by increasing your water intake.
If you have a severe sunburn with blistering or a sunburn that does not heal after a few days of at-home care, call the Jemez Comprehensive Health Center at 575-834-7413 to speak to a Primary Care Provider. Stay safe!
