Chickenpox Awareness Series: Prevention Starts with Protection

In Part 1 of our health series, we discussed what chickenpox is and how it spreads. Chickenpox is a contagious illness caused by a virus that can cause an itchy rash, blisters, and fever. It spreads easily from person to person through the air and through contact with fluid from chickenpox blisters.
Now that we understand how chickenpox spreads, let's look at how we can help prevent it!
Chickenpox Vaccine: Why it is important
Vaccines help protect us from illnesses that can sometimes become serious. The chickenpox vaccine is the best way to protect against chickenpox and helps lower the risk of serious complications.
Who Should Get Vaccinated?
Two doses of the chickenpox vaccine are recommended for the best protection.
Children: The first dose is recommended at 12–15 months, and the second dose at 4–6 years.
Teens and adults: Those who have never had chickenpox or received the vaccine should talk with their healthcare provider about getting vaccinated.
Two doses are about 90% effective at preventing chickenpox. Most vaccine side effects are mild and go away on their own.
If you are unsure whether you or your child needs the chickenpox vaccine, talk with your healthcare provider.
What Can You Do?
Check your child's vaccination records.
Contact your healthcare provider if you or your child may need a dose.
If you have been exposed to chickenpox, contact your healthcare provider promptly to discuss your options.
People who are pregnant or have weakened immune systems should speak with their healthcare provider before considering the chickenpox vaccine.
Don't Forget Your Annual Flu Shot!
The flu shot is another important way to help protect your health. It helps lower the risk of severe illness and complications from influenza. An updated flu vaccine is recommended every year for most people 6 months and older.
Take Action for Your Health
